Il Papa in preghiera sulle tombe dei migranti morti in mare nel cimitero dei senza nome. A segnare le loro sepolture, delle croci ricavate dal legno delle barche naufragate. Leone XIV si è fermato in particolare davanti alla tomba di Yuossef, un bimbo di sei mesi della Guinea. Alla fine del 2020 viaggiava con la madre diciassettenne su un barcone naufragato al largo dalla Libia, a quattro miglia marine dall’isola, i soccorritori lo trovarono in mare ma morì assiderato prima di raggiungere l’ospedale

Il viaggio di Leone XIV a Lampedusa si è aperto con un gesto simbolico alla Porta d’Europa, dove ha sostato in silenzio prima di attraversare il monumento tenendo per mano due bambini figli di migranti. Tra il vento del Mediterraneo e l’immagine della papalina portata via dalle raffiche, il Pontefice ha poi proseguito da solo sugli scogli fino al punto più alto dell’isola, dove si è fermato a guardare l’orizzonte, in un'immagine che ha fatto il giro del mondo
